Richard Lynn (1965)

Richard Lynn is a 1965 graduate of Apex Consolidated High School. During all four years at Apex Consolidated, Richard distinguished himself as a standout athlete, particularly in basketball. His exceptional skill earned him recognition as an All-Star on the W.J.A.C. and he was selected as All Conference. Furthermore, he was recognized as an “All State W.J.A.C. player as well during the 1964-1965 season. His performance on the court consistently reflected not only athletic talent, but also discipline, teamwork, and leadership beyond his years.

In addition to basketball, Richard was an accomplished baseball player and was an outstanding pitcher. One of his most cherished keepsakes is the game-winning baseball that propelled his team to the finals during his junior year.

Richard’s character was shaped well-beyond athletics. He was born the eight of eleven children to Alex and Hattie Lynn, who owned and worked a 55-acre farm. Without modern farming equipment, the family relied on a mule and a plow, instilling in Richard a profound work ethic and sense of responsibility from a very young age. Remarkably, at just fifteen years old, Richard worked as a school bus driver for Wake County School system, earning $27.48 per month. After long workdays, he practiced basketball and baseball with his brothers.

Following his graduation in May of 1965, Richard relocated to Asbury Park, NJ where he worked alongside his brother in the family’s carpet business. Later that year, upon learning that he was being drafted in the United States Army, Richard decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps and he reported to Parris Island, SC on February 20, 1966.

Richard’s service to his country as both honorable and distinguished. He completed advanced training and soon deployed to Vietnam aboard the USS Boxer. During his thirteen-month tour with the third Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, known as “Ripley’s Raiders,” Richard quickly established himself as a capable and trusted Marine, earning the rank of Head Communication Officer under Captain John Ripley. His battalion played a critical role in the historic “Battle of Rock Pile,” including the destruction of the Dong Ha Bridge, an event memorialized at Marine Corps Headquarters in Quantico, Va.

Upon his return home, Richard married his wife, Carrie, and together they raised four children. Now retired, they reside in Wilson, NC. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Richard continues to enjoy athletic competition, proudly supporting the Atlanta Braves and Boston Celtics.

Richard Lynn’s legacy is defined not only by his athletic accomplishments, but also by his integrity, perseverance, service, and positive influence on others.
