Britt Morton (1991)

Britt Morton (Football / Wrestling) – Britt Morton is a 1991 graduate of Apex High School. While a student at Apex, Britt was named All-Conference in both football and wrestling. He was also named “Apex High School Athlete of the Year” for his senior year of high school.  Britt later played at Methodist University and was a 3rd-Team All-American in 1994 and his 8.5 sacks in the 1994 season put him as 4th All-time on the Methodist season records. After graduating from Methodist in 1995, Britt worked for 29 years coaching football, wrestling, and athletic administration while also working as a PE teacher with an emphasis on weight training. Through this time Britt had stints at Apex, Purnell Swett, Southern Durham, Sanderson, Swansboro, New Hanover, and in Hampton, Georgia. In each of those areas, Britt has been recognized as a leader and outstanding. As an athletic administrator, Britt’s abilities were recognized by being named the “2017 Athletic Director of Year in Hampton Georgia.”

Fortunately for Apex, in the summer of 2018, Britt returned to Apex High School to teach weight training and he has been on our coaching staff in different roles since then.

Britt was also instrumental in helping former AD Scott Ferguson move and re-open the Apex High School, Laura Duncan Road campus, after being at Green Level for campus renovations. The athletic program returned in August of 2019 to find athletic facilities that were mostly still under construction. During that time, Britt showed the grit and work ethic of a person who grew up working in the tobacco fields of Green Level. He did not let any obstacle stop him whether it be lack of washing machines, sewage backups in the locker room, or having to make unconventional arrangements for field space.

As the Head Football Coach at Apex, he incredibly changed the football culture after taking over as head coach of a program with 40 total players to ending his head football tenure with close to 100 players. In the fall of 2021, his final season at Apex, we finished 5-5 which was our best record since 2008 and he beat rival Apex Friendship to win the “Old Wake Rivalry.” More than that season, Britt’s significance is that he established a belief that we can be successful and a culture of a strong work ethic that laid the foundation for the on-field success at the end of his tenure and future success after he stepped down to work in other areas of our athletic department.

Britt is a larger-than-life presence on our campus and being a graduate, coach and teacher, he takes a pride in doing things “the Apex way.” One example is the way he keeps our game fields and practice fields cut. Many mornings throughout the year when teachers arrive at school, they are greeted with the stadium lights already being turned on. The staff now knows that means that Coach Morton is already down on the field cutting grass and getting it ready for our student athletes. He gets here earlier than anyone else, so that he can make the fields look incredible for those players. I cannot tell you how many fans express to us that we have the best fields around. I’m sure Coach Del Phillips is proud of the way Britt maintains these fields.

Finally, Britt has taken over the wrestling program the last few years and has overseen the implementation of women’s wrestling too. Just as we saw in football, the wrestling number of participants has exploded. We have already won a Conference Championship in Women’s wrestling (2024 Conference Champs). In men’s wrestling, this season (2026) we beat Cary who has been the standard for excellence in the area and the state for many decades. This season (2026) we also won our first Conference Championship in men’s wrestling. The same relentlessness that we saw as a football coach is the same formula we are seeing in wrestling. Britt has also been consistently recognized by his peers as one of the best wrestling coaches around. He was selected for the 2026 Conference Wrestling Coach Year at Apex High School, the 2016 Wrestling Coach Year at Hampton High Georgia, the 2007 Wrestling Coach Year at New Hanover High, and the 2000 Wrestling Coach Year at Southern Durham.

Recently, on top of running our wrestling program, Britt has returned to our football coaching staff, this time as an assistant to Rob Fronk who is one of our former players and one of his former assistant coaches. Britt’s energy to keep the fields immaculate, coach our wrestling teams to uncharted consistently high levels, coaching football, running our weight lifting program is only something someone with his energy level, his positivity, and his work ethic could accomplish.

It is a relentless pride and energy that comes from wholeheartedly believing the best about Apex High School and a pride in bringing out the best of our students and our community. Britt is married to the most amazing lady ever, Tracy Morton, who is a teacher and Head of the PE department at Knightdale High School.
